How to work safely

As more people return to work, it is more important than ever to take precautions to protect your health and the health of the community. Anyone who works outside the home should check their health before every shift and follow these general health and safety tips at work to prevent COVID-19.

If you isolated because you had confirmed or suspected COVID-19, review these best practices for leaving isolation and returning to work.

With or without symptoms, anyone who works can get free testing for COVID-19. No doctor's note is required.

Right to Recover Program (City)

You may be able to get funds from Right to Recover. The Right to Recover Program provides a one-time payment to adult residents of San Francisco who test positive for COVID-19, and anticipate experiencing financial hardship during their quarantine or isolation. There is no application process and the City will not ask or record any citizenship or immigration questions. Immigration status does not affect eligibility.  

You must be experiencing financial hardship because of being unable to work or are too sick to work during isolation for Covid.

You may eligible for Right to Recover benefits if you: 

  • Have a positive COVID lab test result in the State of California after January 1, 2022
  • Are a resident of San Francisco
  • Are 18 years of age or older 
  • Do not have access to or did not receive paid sick leave or unemployment insurance benefits during isolation or are not able to work from home during isolation.

  • Residential mailing address in San Francisco (No P.O. Boxes)
  • Preferred Language for Communication

Paid Sick Leave (City)

San Francisco’s Paid Sick Leave Ordinance requires employers to provide paid sick leave to all employees who perform work in San Francisco including temporary and part-time employees, as highlighted by the San Francisco Office of Labor Standards Enforcement.


How much can I collect? You will be paid at your normal rate. Employees earn 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Employers with 10 or more employees may cap an employee's sick time balance at 72 hours. Employers with fewer than 10 employees may cap an employee's sick time balance at 40 hours.

How long will it take to receive the benefits? Paid sick leave is provided by your employer and will be issued on your normal paycheck.


You may be eligible if you miss work due to:

Quarantine/isolation order

Health-care provider guidance to self-quarantine

Seeking diagnosis for symptoms of COVID-19

Caring for a family member who has been ordered to isolate or quarantine, or is seeking a diagnosis for COVID-19

Caring for a child (or for employers with over 500 employees, any family member) for whom care is unavailable due to COVID-19

Immigration status does not affect eligibility.

Paid Family Leave (City) 

Effective April 17, 2020, businesses with 500 or more employees worldwide must provide up to 80 hours of paid Public Health Emergency Leave to each employee who performs work in San Francisco. Employees may use this leave when they are unable to work (or telework) due to specified reasons related to COVID-19.  The leave is in effect only during the local emergency. Employers must maintain health care benefits if you take leave to care for yourself or your dependents under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) or California Family Rights Act (CFRA) and Paid Family Leave. You should consult with your employer or union representative regarding health care coverage during a period of work reduction to see if any additional benefits are available to you.

If you lose your job, federal law generally requires employers to offer you and your family a temporary extension of health care coverage, also known as COBRA. Consult with your employer regarding COBRA enrollment.

Job loss due to COVID-19 is now a qualifying life event for enrollment in Covered California, which provides health care coverage to California residents at affordable and subsidized rates. Alternative coverage may be available through the City’s Healthy San Francisco Program, which provides free or low-cost health care services to uninsured San Francisco residents.

Find other support services at the Human Services Agency (HSA) ranging from CalFresh to cash assistance, to health insurance (Medi-Cal), job training, supportive care, and expanded services for older adults and people with disabilities. As of April 23, 2020, California households with children who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at school received up to an extra $365 in food benefits from USDA's Pandemic EBT program. You can now use your EBT card to make purchases online. Students are encouraged to apply for CalFresh IF they are eligible for state or federally financed work-study, as determined by the campus financial aid office, OR if they have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $0, as determined by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC).
